Firearms obtaining no “WP” evidence about the receiver but have affixed barrels with “WP” proof mark, in addition to the “Oval P” would signify that though it can be an more mature receiver, the barrel was replaced soon after 1905 by a person outside the Winchester repair service shop. (Together with verification by other barrel markings)
Receivers without the “WP” evidence but have barrels with the “WP” evidence fall into that period of time from 1905-1908 where the barrel might possess the “WP” evidence but the receiver is not going to.

I cannot figure out precisely in the event the “Oval P” was initially used determined by my operate but I may make this observation. The Oval P proof stamp is just observed on barrels which have a Fashion 3 barrel address which is found over the remaining side with the barrel. This placement was not common right until 1910 for the Design 1892 rifles.

While in the early 70’s the Olin Winchester-Western Division tried to diversify with at least two unsuccessful makes an attempt.
